Magpies Return to Footy Guidelines and Pods

G’day Magpies!

Thanks for your patience while we put together our plan to approach this season.

As you may be aware, the USAFL made the decision to cancel Nationals. While we would love to compete and bring home some trophies, our Board agrees with this decision.

However, we also want to get to a point where we are able to safely return to playing footy. In order to do so, the Board, our coaches, leadership, and medical professionals (the Risk Coordinating team) have come together to set guidelines for returning to footy. These guidelines follow CDC, New York state, and NYC guidance for high-risk sports.

Our main goal is to get to the point where we are able to play NYCAFL in the Fall. The infection rate will largely determine whether we are able to get to this point, as will your efforts in easing back into footy.

We are very much aware that every player will need to evaluate their comfort levels according to their own risk assessment in this environment and we support your decision to return to playing or refrain from it. We hope that the NY Magpies Return to Footy will help to build confidence in the approach that we are instituting as a Club.

There are many uncertainties with planning for future play, the Return to Footy guidance will help the Board to make informed decisions that keep player safety as a priority. The ladder included in this guidance follows a progression with each new tier starting with small pods, into larger groups, and then integrating contact into training sessions. In later tiers, we are also implementing guidelines on how we will assess playing opposing clubs and travel for tournaments, including Nationals.

We are launching the Tier One pods this week which allows for groups of 10 to begin training. These pods will be held throughout the city at various days/times during the week.

Tier One Pod information:

  • Players sign up for only one pod per week. We want to make sure that everyone has the opportunity to train. We will make adjustments to this if necessary.
  • Pods are capped at 10.
  • Players must fill out a health assessment on the day of their selected pod.
  • Masks or face coverings are required (NY state and City mandate).
  • The Club will supply hand sanitizer and disinfectant wipes but we encourage you to bring your own.
  • Pod leaders will help to enforce the Club’s Guidelines during these sessions.

The intent is to progress into the next tier every 21 days, however, the Risk Coordinating group listed above will meet to confirm each progression.
