The Magpies traveled north to Boston to play North Carolina and Boston in a 3 team tournament to warm up for Nationals. The Pies fielded a strong team, but were still missing a few key players. It showed that spots at Nationals were still up for grabs as the Pies started well and got on top in general play early. Smiley and McCormick provided strong targets up forward and the midfield of Solly, Watts, Speilman, Desai and Tornay was getting plenty of the ball. Unfortunately, the Magpies were wasteful in front of goal and missed multiple chances to put the game away by half time.
In the second half, North Carolina came out strong and goaled early to put the pressure on New York. However, the Magpies back six of Walker, Thompson, Flavel, Daniher, McMaster and Mason hit back and continually repelled North Carolina’s forward entries. They gave the forwards plenty of supply and Bowen, Brennan and Mitchell all capitalized to kick New York out to a strong lead and hold on for a comfortable win.
Magpies veteran Joel Daniher was pleased with his side’s performance saying “North Carolina have been big improvers this year, so it was pleasing to come away with a win and a solid, even contribution from all the guys.”
